In Loving Memory of Ira Fingles

January 24, 2020

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of attorney, advocate and friend, Ira Fingles. Ira was a part of our Autism New Jersey/COSAC family for decades, supporting our mission and providing parents with invaluable information and legal services.

He was generous and knowledgeable, a kind soul, with a wry wit and unparalleled compassion. Our staff, past and present, agree that we learned so much from Ira. We know we are not alone.

We were looking forward to him sharing his expertise at our upcoming Transition Conference. That’s where Ira was in his element.  Helping families by providing valuable information and insight. Defending their rights.

In recent months, Ira and our Helpline worked collaboratively to advocate for and support a few families of young adults experiencing complex clinical and legal challenges. These were families that had nowhere to turn, facing seemingly insurmountable bureaucratic obstacles. Ira was attentive, responsive, supportive, and effective.

He acknowledged and recognized their pain and worked tirelessly to ensure that solutions were found for these young adults with autism and co-occurring medical and mental health diagnoses. Through his efforts, they were connected to the services they needed and deserved.

He did all this pro bono.

This was quintessential Ira. A generous, kind person who made a substantial and tangible difference in the lives of so many in the autism and disability community. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to his loved ones, family, and friends and all those whose lives he touched.

We love you, Ira.
