Autism Awareness: Be You

One of the jobs of an ambassador is to alert government officials about important issues. Connecting with your town council and raising awareness about autism will help ensure they keep the needs of the autism community in mind. Please consider writing your mayor to ask him/her to proclaim April as Autism Awareness Month in your town!

Here are some ways to reach out to your local officials:

  • Write a letter stating why autism awareness is important to you. Use your ambassador letterhead from your kit.

  • Request a proclamation declaring April as Autism Awareness Month.

  • Ask to make a 5-minute presentation about autism and the needs of the autism community at the next town council meeting.

Hurry! You’ll need to reach out to your mayor well in advance of your town’s April Council Meeting to ensure you can get the proclamation read at the meeting. Ask about a photo opportunity. Also, there might be a chance to have a student with autism recite the Pledge of Allegiance, another great way to raise awareness and build acceptance in your community!
