Respite Care Training

Professional caregivers -- this FREE workshop is for you!  Also great for extended family members and friends who provide respite support.

Parents have consistently reported the critical nature of training for respite personnel for them to feel comfortable leaving their child (of any age) in someone else’s care. A much-needed break is only possible when they know that the respite provider understands the complex and unique needs of individuals with autism so he or she can keep their child safe. In addition to an overview of autism spectrum disorders, this workshop will discuss communication techniques, challenging behavior, and parent collaboration. Participants can contribute to the development of our new Individualized Respite Care Guide and receive a free copy when available. Parents are also welcome to attend and can bring any number of respite providers.  Partial support for these workshops is provided by an Autism Speaks Family Services Community Grant.

Professional Training

Did you know that Autism New Jersey can come to your school or agency and provide specific training for your staff?

We can tailor workshops to specific groups of professionals including special or general education teachers; preschool staff or day care providers; paraprofessionals; child study team; or service providers for adults. Some of our most requested topics include teaching strategies, social skills, communication, challenging behavior, IEPs, and transition planning.
